Shared by IRPO: Debris Slide Closes Section of U.S. 176 in Polk County

RALEIGH – A section of U.S. 176, located 4 miles south of Saluda in Polk County, is closed because of rocks and mud that continued to slide onto the highway from a hillside above it.

NCDOT maintenance crews twice cleared off earlier slides, but engineers determined that for safety reasons, the closure should remain in place until at least Friday because of continuing rain and the possibility of more debris coming onto the road.

No homes are cut off, with residents north of the slide having access to Saluda and those south able to get to Tryon.

Once the rain subsides and the area dries out, NCDOT engineers will reassess the hillside and see what repairs are needed to prevent more material from coming down onto the road.
