Span over U.S. 74A to be inspected again Monday
ASHEVILLE – A tractor-trailer truck hauling an excavator on U.S. 74 Alternate in Rutherford County struck the underside of the Oakland Road overpass bridge Saturday evening.
The N.C. Department of Transportation chose to temporarily close the bridge over U.S. 74A until additional inspections are conducted Monday morning to determine the extent of the damage and needed repairs.
Transportation officials have established a marked detour for the bridge closing. Traffic heading north on Oakland Road can take U.S. 74A East to Isothermal Community College Drive then make a U-turn onto U.S. 74A West back to Oakland Road.
Traffic heading south on Oakland Road can take U.S. 74A West to Thunder Road, then make a U-turn onto U.S. 74A East back to Oakland Road.
Transportation officials urge drivers to slow down, drive with caution and follow the posted detour route in the area.
