Opinions sought for interchange improvements

ASHEVILLE – The N.C. Department of Transportation invites citizens, business owners and interested parties to a public meeting on Monday, Oct. 30 regarding proposed improvements to the interchange at Sugar Hill Road and Interstate 40.

The improvements are intended to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow at the Exit 81 interchange in McDowell County. The proposed project includes replacing the bridge over I-40, improving ramps to and from the freeway, and providing three lanes with curb and gutter on Sugar Hill Road between the ramps. Project information and materials, including a preliminary design map, is available online at https://isothermalrpo.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/U-5818_Public_Meeting_Map.pdf.
The meeting will be held from 4-7 p.m. at the Community Building at 191 North Main Street in Marion. Interested parties may attend at any time to meet with transportation officials who will answer questions and gather comments. All written comments and questions — a key component of the planning — need to be submitted by Nov. 13.
